He was the nephew of historian William H. Ransom and son of Baptist preacher William H. Hathaway Jr..
Ransom was raised in Marion. He was educated at Bethany College in Lindsborg, Kansas, and Adelbert College in Garden Grove, California. He received his bachelor’s degree from Yale University in 1912.
Career at Yale
Ransom began his career at the Yale Law School by teaching there in 1912-13, and was an instructor in law from 1913-17. He first found work as a law clerk with Senator Albert B. Cummins in Washington, D. C., returning to the West in 1916.
Ransom returned to Connecticut to accept a position in the law office of Herbert B. Pratt. He was admitted to the bar in 1916, and was an assistant town attorney for Westerly, Rhode Island for a year, then was a prosecuting attorney for Windham County in 1917, his last known stop before becoming a war correspondent.
His wartime experiences as a war correspondent are regarded as remarkable for the quality and length of his coverage, the use of personal transport, and his ability to “pre-script” pieces of news for his future publication. Ransom learned of the sinking of the Lusitania while on tour in Washington, D. C., and by the time he arrived back in Connecticut two days later, the news was on the front page of every newspaper in the state. He then discovered the sinking of the Cunard liner while aboard a ship in New York harbor, was moved to head back to England, and accompanied by another passenger, took the midnight train to London to file his story on the in-formation. His wife Dottie joined him later, and within one month of the initial sinking, Ransom was writing for National Geographic.
Ransom was assigned to the office of General John J. Pershing (commanding general of the American Expeditionary Forces). Although Ransom never saw combat and his job was to write about it, he did accompany Pershing to the Argonne Forest.
Ransom left the AEF in November, 1918, and returned to his Connecticut law firm, Hathaway & Pratt. He returned to the Yale Law School to teach in 1919-20, and returned to Washington, D. C. to practice in 1921-22, where he did legal work for Senator William E. Borah.

At the top of the report you’ll find information on their safety record, which is AEP’s highest priority and remains their top priority. The 2010 Safety Report was created by the Energy Safety Board (ESB) and contains an impressive listing of all the pipeline safety incidents that have occurred in the past year.
Kennecott’s safety record also remains amongst the best, once again, this year. In fact, the September 30th incident in which a gas leak near Tyler, West Texas in AEP’s Lone Star Pipeline system is estimated to have resulted in a 1.5Million BTU blast and fire did not result in a single death, injury or property loss, and resulted in no single firefighting, rescue or hazardous materials call for AEP personnel. In all, it was a very busy year for them and their contractors.
If you’d like to review any of the 2010 Annual Report, please feel free to contact me.
AEP & Kennecott Land or Longview, TX Gas Pipeline update:
As expected, the new pump station is going up in Longview, TX and is scheduled to be online in July 2010. Of course, a new pump station means more gas and new gas at the price it took us 20 years to get it to that price.
Kennecott has been the primary contract partner on this project since the beginning, with J.E. Merit Pipeline Consulting doing the preliminary design. Contractors have been selected, and expect to begin work by the end of June. I’ll post more details here and on Twitter as we have them.
AEP knows they are playing a waiting game at this point. While they can’t start pumping gas until the new station
